Deftones is a most peculiar name. The wordplay is truly top notch, and it's more than accurate in describing the band's rock fusion blend. Rather, it's that the Deftones aren't one of those bands that make a ton of noise beyond the stage or their sturdy discography. They've instead spent the last 30-ish years releasing great, hugely textured albums — 2000's "White Pony" remains a proper masterpiece — and gigging the world over.

There is clearly something going on in Phoenix's rock music scene. In January, LöFest brought an extravaganza of music, art and carbs to Last Exit Live. Then, just this past weekend (Feb. 21), Chrome Rhino and Rattlesnake Suitcase engaged in an indie music battle royal at Crescent Ballroom. Quick, somebody make sure those Idiotarod folks didn't spike the town's water supply or something.

The final performance of Jeff Lynne's ELO tour in the U.S. at the Footprint Center was spectacular, leaving audiences buzzing with bittersweet emotions. As the lights dimmed, fans were transported to the mesmerizing universe of ELO, complete with a stage that resembled a massive spaceship, featuring a stunning screen at its center. This set-up projected breathtaking visuals that celebrated the music while capturing the energy and enthusiasm of the crowd.

The second annual Tempe Noise Takeover music festival was held Sept. 6 to 8. Thirty-plus bands and two venues, Yucca Taproom and Time Out Lounge, put on a weekend of local music to support the Abortion Fund of Arizona. Each night, the festival was a testament to the incredible support from the charity and the local talent. The community's involvement was evident in both venues' diverse musical genres.

Your Oct. 19 editorial on the “Influx from the Golden State ”reminded me of an incident that happened about 15 years ago. I am a local real estate agent and our company was hired to help a major company move from the southeast to Las Vegas. Many of the employees had an option to remain in the southeast or move with their families to Las Vegas. Part of our job was to introduce them to the area, most importantly, the education available for their children.
