The cavernous auditorium at Central High School in Phoenix crackled with a mix of desperation and nascent rebellion on a crisp Wednesday. Before a stage usually reserved for choir concerts and amateur John Steinbeck plays, several dozen people turned out to see Arizona’s attorney general, Kris Mayes, convene a panel unlike any in the school’s recent memory. “Heartbreaking phone calls and emails have been pouring into my office over the past month,” Mayes said.

You just can't keep a good emo band down. Following their original run from 1992 to 1995, icons Sunny Day Real Estate have reunited several times over the years. That includes reunions from 1997 to 2001, 2009 to 2011 and again in 2022. Fortunately, this latest run still seems to have some magic in at as Sunny Day Real Estate have announced their latest North American tour.

Deftones is a most peculiar name. The wordplay is truly top notch, and it's more than accurate in describing the band's rock fusion blend. Rather, it's that the Deftones aren't one of those bands that make a ton of noise beyond the stage or their sturdy discography. They've instead spent the last 30-ish years releasing great, hugely textured albums — 2000's "White Pony" remains a proper masterpiece — and gigging the world over.

Admittedly, M3F Fest 2025 did have its share of ups and downs. But if there's one thing that the fest does especially well, it's serve as a vital source for totally nutso things uttered by its various attendees. Heck, we'd put it right up there with Innings Fest for sheer absurdity and humor. So what exactly is it about M3F that draws out people's most peculiar inner thoughts? The feel-good, hippie-adjacent attendees are probably just more free and unbothered.

Some festival experiences are easy enough to pick apart. However, when it comes to M3F Fest, that prospect is altogether more complicated. Because this fest isn't just a great place to take in interesting electronic/dance music, shop fun and kooky local merchants and peep the continually insane costumes and outfits. Over the years, M3F has made a real difference, donating all ticket proceeds to help raise more than $6 million for various Phoenix charities.

Sharing one of my last pieces pre-editor role: celebrating the joys of Bright Eyes and ‘I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning,’ which turns 20 today. (@phoenixnewtimes) https://t.co/gy7NqX6dbe

Me but ‘No Mercy.’ (Does that dodge thing count as a pivot?)

If you could pivot while you run, I'd still be playing this game.

This is seemingly my last Judging ever. Thanks to @AIPTcomics for letting me run this bad boy for 5 years, and making my mark. It was often more work than I wanted, but I’m proud of my weird baby and whatever value it has now. Long live #comics and maybe even my dumb opinions.
