Meat department drives household shopping trips, with meat purchased more than once a week during average 54 trips per year. Retail meat highlights for the month:New records for meat department dollars and pounds were set in 2024. 2024 ended up being a strong year for grocery retailers, with total food and beverage sales of $922 billion. Sales rose 3.0% in dollars and 1.3% in units. Everyday demand was strong due to purchasing restaurant food less often while cooking more in an effort to save money.

I guess because I’ve clicked on them in the past, those pesky articles about the perils of agriculture regularly appear in my news feed. And they seem to be especially prevalent around New Year’s. Apparently, the activists (like sports fans) decide this’ll be the year for real change to occur – and they want to let us know about it. That brings me to CleanTechnica. The organization seems primarily committed to promoting the benefits of electric vehicles.

Year In ReviewMost producers are generally feeling (very) positive about the business. That’s not surprising given what happened in the markets in 2024 (and 2025 has started with a new all-time high). The fed market averaged $187 for the year –up ~$11/cwt versus 2023. Meanwhile, the CME feeder cattle index averaged ~$250 for the year and even managed to eclipse $260 in December. But none of that is new; rather, it’s just a continuation of the longer-run trend.
