The Johnson County commissioners are the latest government officials to sound the alarm on property tax legislation that is moving through the Indiana Statehouse. The commissioners approved a resolution Monday to oppose a provision in Senate Bill 1 to eliminate taxes on business personal property by 2033 without replacement revenue.

Rivers have receded, and Edinburgh and southern Johnson County are getting back to normal. Although Irwin Park is still closed, there were no fatalities and no reports of major damage from the flooding in Johnson County, said Stephanie Sichting, director of the county’s Emergency Management Agency. As of Thursday afternoon, both the Big Blue River and Driftwood River reached slightly below the “Action” stage, which means water is higher than normal, but no longer at flood stage.

The Whiteland Town Council had a public spat over its president’s alleged unauthorized meeting on employee performance. In a contentious town council meeting Tuesday, Whiteland Police Chief Rick Shipp said council president Richard Hill gave him directives to enforce parking violations and made him feel reprimanded. Council member Joe Sayler says Hill’s directives were a violation of town ordinance and possibly the state’s Open Door Law.

A series of projects on Interstate 65 will expand the roadway and improve safety on the southeast side of Indianapolis. Starting as early as May, the Indiana Department of Transportation will be working on the I-65 Safety & Efficiency project. The $112.7 million project will last roughly two years and span about 5 miles from north of Interstate 465 to just south of the I-65/Interstate 70 overpass.

A flavorful new addition is now open for Johnson County pizza lovers. Madaan’s KK Pizza opened March 27 off of U.S. 31 in Amity— filling the space previously occupied by Arthur’s Roto Grill. Owners Shweta Khanna and Gaurav Madaan, residents of Franklin Township in Indianapolis, have crafted a menu that blends traditional pizza favorites with more adventurous tastes. The new eatery offers original, thin and cauliflower crust, and plans to introduce a cheese-burst pizza with cheese in the crust.

A UFO researcher and author is coming to Franklin to prove that flying saucers are real, among other goals, he says. Raymond Szymanski of Dayton, Ohio will hold a presentation at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Franklin branch of Johnson County Public Library. The event, sponsored by the Indiana chapter of the Mutual UFO Network, or MUFON, will present information on flying saucers and extraterrestrials, followed by a question-and-answer session. It is free to attend.

Spring is here and students are helping get the newly founded Prince’s Lakes community garden ready to grow. Kathy Lee, who is organizing the project, enlisted the help of students from Center Grove Community High School and the Indiana Agriculture and Technology School in Trafalgar to help make raised beds for the garden. Center Grove students are creating 10 raised garden beds, while the agriculture students are creating three handicap-accessible raised beds.

The city of Franklin was awarded a grant to start a new program to help residents with home repairs. Franklin is one of four communities to receive a grant to create an Owner-Occupied Rehabilitation grant program. The Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs, or OCRA, awarded $1.5 million in grants, with Franklin receiving $350,000 to give out to local homeowners.

The Prince’s Lakes Police Department will soon call a new place home as it moves into the old wastewater building behind town hall. The Prince’s Lakes Town Council approved a total of $33,163.07 in December to turn the old wastewater building into a new police department. The department is currently housed in town hall. The department can move into the new space once the equipment currently occupying the space is moved out.

Almost two years after a tornado hit Whiteland, the town’s street department building will soon be rebuilt. The Whiteland Town Council unanimously approved a professional services agreement on March 11 for work to rebuild the street department. The agreement is for design, soil testing and getting state approvals for the project, said Shaun “Slim” Young, Whiteland’s director of operations.
