Irwin Park in Edinburgh is getting new playground equipment in time for its 80th anniversary. Last week, the Johnson County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved last week giving a $250,675.46 grant to Edinburgh Parks & Recreation to upgrade playground equipment at Irwin Park. The money comes from Health First Indiana funds as a core public health service for Johnson County residents, according to the grant agreement.

A Blackford County native with Franklin family ties is making moves in state government. Indiana Gov. Mike Braun recently appointed Josh Richardson as the Department of Workforce Development Commissioner. Richardson assumed the role effective June 2, after having previously held several roles at the DWD and having worked on workforce development and unemployment insurance.

Vehicle purchases worth $1.23 million were approved for the Whiteland Fire Department. The Whiteland Town Council approved several vehicle purchases and repairs for the fire department Tuesday, including three new staff vehicles, a new fire engine and repairs for a ladder truck and Engine 71. The plan is to issue fire protection district bonds not to exceed $1.46 million to fund the new engine. The vote was unanimous among those present. Council president Richard Hill was absent from the meeting.

Survivors of sexual assault and child abuse now have a place closer to home to get needed services. The Johnson County Board of Commissioners and ASSIST Indiana entered into an agreement Monday that puts the nonprofit in charge of the county’s Children’s Advocacy Center and allows them to perform needed victim services within Johnson County Health Department exam rooms, according to the agreement.

After last month’s Johnson County Council decision caused a decrease in the health director’s salary, a pay increase for the position was denied Monday. Paul Hass, attorney for the Johnson County Board of Health, approached the Johnson County Council on Monday to ask the council to raise the health director’s salary to $99,369. However, the council voted not to make any changes until budget time, leaving the salary at $88,593.
