Insurgency OverviewThe Islamic State Mozambique (ISM) is the name given to the Salafi-Jihadist insurgent group that has been affiliated with the Islamic State’s Central Africa Province (ISCAP) since 2019, but has been active in Mozambique since 2017. The group is also known more commonly as Ahl al-Sunnah wa al Jamma’ah (ASWJ) and Al-Shabab, and has been active primarily in northern Mozambique in the provinces of Cabo Delgado, Niassa, and recently, Nampula (1).
