RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – Helene strengthened into a hurricane Wednesday morning near the Yucatan Peninsula and continues to get stronger, now expected to be a Category 4 before landfall Thursday night in Florida. As of Thursday morning, the National Hurricane Center said Helene had sustained winds of 90 miles per hour. The Category 1 Hurricane is 350 miles southwest of Tampa, Florida.

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – Tropical Storm Helene formed in the western Caribbean Sea on Tuesday but could be a major hurricane Thursday when it makes landfall in Florida. Helene strengthened Wednesday morning with sustained winds up to 65 miles per hour with gusts up to 75 mph. It’s moving to the WNW at 9 mph around a mid-level area of high pressure.
