The other day as I carried my dog in his crate across the road from his daycare lodgings to my car, the crate started rocking crazily. Riley was barking and leaping about, for no apparent reason. Then, in the fading light, I saw what he was upset about: a cat sitting imperturbably on the footpath. I stored Riley away in the car and tsked at the tabby, who ran to me, rubbed around me and purred. For a moment it was like I was stroking my late lamented tabby Merrick. I miss having a cat in my life.

Who wants to go outside in this weather? Answer: your dog. Even my cold-averse, rain-hating Riley wants his outdoor time. Yesterday he trudged behind me at the dog park before beating me to the gate – but he sniffed and place-marked enough to meet his apparent needs. A later lap of the block engaged him more, but he was still happy to get back in the car. Yes, even in winter they need their daily exercise and mental stimulation, and dog owners must rug up to comply.

Cats are inherently dramatic creatures. Which is the quality that makes them such fine dancers. Oh, as well as their athleticism, grace, and appetite for the daily hard grind of training. Day in, day out, they take to the stage (floor, bed, chair, porch), lie down on it, and practise, practise, practise. You doubt me?
