    I was at an event recently, talking about my novel. It's a "comic novel" - as in, one that is meant to be funny. When someone asked me what it was similar to, I paused. There are a lot of influences that inspired the humour but I couldn't think of one book that would helpfully answer the question. "Is it like A Confederacy of Dunces?" someone else asked. "That's the only book anyone mentions when people talk about funny novels. No one knows the names of any others." Could that be true? I wondered.

Since then, I have forgotten everything that happened on the show and everyone it happened to. I barely remember the name of the show.

    On Saturday afternoon, a man stabbed almost 20 people, killing six of them in Bondi Junction Westfield mall before he was shot dead by a police officer. It was and remains deeply unsettling, scary and sad, especially for a country that doesn’t suffer these kinds of mass killings regularly. Like a lot of people, I jumped online to find out what was happening as events unfolded.

    I love a good music biopic. Even a halfway decent story accompanied by iconic songs will do the job. But, in my opinion, there are too many music biopics and they need to stop right away. You know what I’m talking about. You can’t toss a sack of lizards around here without hitting a new music biopic. There are so many that people are wondering (publicly) if music biopics are the new superhero films. I feel like all I’ve been doing is watching very… okay music biopics.
