In all, the Giants had 16 state meet participants, 11 men and five women. It was the most in Ally Briano’s eight seasons as Sequoias’ head coach. Brendan Meyer (Lemoore) competed in three individual events for the Giants’ men, finishing 18th in the 100 free (48.26), 21st in the 200 free (1:49.67) and 22nd in the 50 free (21.64). He was also a member of the 12th-place 200 medley relay (1:36.64) and 16th-place 400 free relay (3:16.38).

Johnson (sophomore/Corcoran) and Reece (freshman/Las Vegas) led a dominant performance by the Giants’ hurdlers.Johnson won the 110 hurdles in 14.79, finishing 0.06 seconds ahead of Diablo Valley’s Soloman Gates. The Fresno Pacific commit was also fifth in the 400 hurdles in 53.88, and will qualify for state in this event if his time is better than the fifth-place finisher at the Southern California Championships on May 10. Johnson missed the state meet in both events last season.

Preliminary swimming heats begin at 9:30 a.m. each day, with finals starting at 4:30 p.m. March 1-2 and at 4 p.m. March 3. Diving finals for women’s 1-meter and men’s 3-meter are at 12:30 p.m. March 1, and the women’s 3-meter and men’s 1-meter at 12:30 p.m. March 2. It started with his father, Jerry, who was the football coach at Fresno High when Allen was a young kid. Then there were influential coaches throughout Allen’s decorated baseball career, starting in his early teens with long-time area scout George Omachi, followed by Hoover High’s Hal Froese, Kings River Community College’s Jack Hacker and Fresno State’s Bob Bennett.
