    The cause of a structure fire in Galesburg Thursday remains under investigation. The Galesburg Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 254 and 266 Ohio Ave., October 26, 2023, at 12:12 p.m. The response included all three stations and the 11 personnel on duty. Upon arrival, personnel encountered two detached garages on fire. Battalion Chief Dave Farrell established command, and access was gained from an alleyway behind the residences to attack the fire.

    A stakeholder meeting was held Wednesday, October 24, in Monmouth over the city’s upcoming downtown square revitalization project with Massie Massie and Associates. The revitalized square would include a revamped traffic flow that features a one-lane roundabout, right turn lanes, landscaped boulevards, a small increase in parking, and making the square more compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Market Alley would also get its own branding and furnishings.

    Work is coming along on the new Galesburg Public Library. Library Director Noelle Thompson tells WGIL that work on the parking lot is underway and the painting of the interior has begun. She says that work is expected to wrap up on the new location in the first half of the next year. “It’s hard to give [an exact timeline] cause there’s so many moving pieces but we expect to see construction completed early next year.

    The Board of Education for Galesburg CUSD #205 held another lengthy discussion Monday night over rental fees for different district facilities. Whereas the conversations last month were in regard to the hourly rental prices and the categories of groups associated with each price, the talks this month were largely focused on whether making the district’s facilities available at all was the goal.

    Rural heritage will be on full display this weekend with the return of the Scenic Drive. The Knox County and Spoon River Valley Scenic Drives get underway Saturday and Sunday at various locations and continue the following weekend, October 14 and 15. The drive is a self-guided car tour through a number of small towns and rural locations and communities in southern Knox County and Fulton County.
