A former southside elementary school will soon be transformed into one of the Galesburg’s newest and most versatile parks. A bid for construction work at Cooke Park was approved at Monday’s Council meeting. This marks the first phase of the park's development, made possible by volunteer efforts, staff work and a significant state OSLAD grant contribution of $500,000, and half from the city. The initial phase includes playground equipment, a shelter, and a walking path.

Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers is making progress toward opening its first Galesburg location, with civil drawings now submitted to the city and architectural plans underway, the franchisee confirmed to WGIL on Thursday. The fast-casual restaurant, known for its steakburgers and frozen custard, would the located on Henderson Street, with an anticipated opening by the end of 2025, according to franchisee Steven Young of MLY Investments. He did not disclose the exact location.

A dedicated nurse whose 55-year career touched countless lives and whose generous spirit fueled decades of public service in Galesburg has died. Alice Stenander of Galesburg died Sunday, April 6. She was 83. Born in Iowa, Stenander left home at 18 to train at the Mercy School of Nursing in Dubuque, Iowa. After graduating, she settled in Iowa City, where she worked at the University of Iowa Hospital and became one of its youngest head nurses.
