Sunday night wasn’t a bad a time to be a Blue Devil on the diamond. Or a former one, for that matter. The Leominster High baseball team won its Division 1 tournament opener in thrilling fashion, while a LHS alum was shutting down the opposition at a different level. The 24th-seeded Blue Devils took care of business in the opening round of the D1 tourney, pulling the upset on No. 9 Weymouth, 2-0 in nine innings at Libby Field.

The 29th-seeded Lunenburg High baseball team snuck past No. 36 Gardner, 2-1, Friday afternoon in a Division 4 preliminary round contest. Brett Richard had a pair of hits and scored on a wild pitch for Lunenburg (12-9), while Nate Ayles scored the go-ahead run on fielder’s choice by John Harrington in the sixth inning. Brady Kelly allowed just two hits to earn the win, striking out eight in six innings on the hill for the Blue Knights, who advance to face No. 4 St. John Paul II on Sunday afternoon.

But when the NBA Finals get underway next week, Mark Daigneault will have an opportunity to hoist the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy. Daigneault and the Oklahoma City Thunder are just four wins away from doing so.

The road to a third straight Division 3 baseball crown will require a little extra work for Oakmont Regional. The two-time defending state champion Spartans were one of three local programs to have earned the right to take part in the postseason, as the MIAA released its baseball, softball and boys and girls lacrosse pairings on Wednesday. Not all times and dates for contests were immediately available.

High school lacrosse fans, circle June 12 on your calendars. The Central Mass. Lacrosse Coaches Association (CMLCA) will hold an All-Star Game that Thursday evening, showcasing some of the best and brightest in the area, squaring off in an exhibition contest. The CMLCA announced the rosters and format Tuesday, as well as revealing handful of season awards. The All-Star Game will be played at 7 p.m. at Grafton High School on June 12.
