Sir Keir Starmer has refused to back the European Union in a trade war after Donald Trump threatened to slap tariffs on exports from the bloc. The Prime Minister said that choosing between Brussels or Washington was not an “either/or” question given the United Kingdom’s relations with both. It came after Mr Trump warned that Britain had been “out of line” in its trade with the US and described the situation with the EU as “an atrocity”.

The scandal which saw thousands of people given infected blood or blood products throughout the 1970s and 1980s is one of the gravest injustices in our national history. It has shattered the lives of many innocent people, causing so much harm to both those directly infected and their loved ones. Despite everything they have endured, they have never given up their fight.

Raglan farmer ordered to pay nearly Nick Thomas-Symonds, MP for Torfaen Many congratulations to our new Police and Crime Commissioner Jane Mudd, who was elected this month. Speaking with Jane, her down-to-earth decency shines through. It’s clear that she has a huge commitment to justice and fairness, and to delivering for all the people of Gwent. ‘Is that the one we’ve been reading about?” asked Richard Nixon, when he first met Janet Hewlett-Davies, press officer to the prime minister, Harold Wilson. In fact, the president had the wrong woman. The papers in April 1974, at the beginning of Wilson’s second stint in Downing Street, had been full of stories about another female assistant, his political secretary, Marcia Williams, engaging in property speculation; the so-called “land deals affair”.

We need to safeguard the UK’s sovereign steelmaking capability Nick Thomas-Symonds, MP for Torfaen This weekend I was in Newport at a rally to support our steelworkers, including those at Llanwern. It’s been quite a month for the steel industry in south Wales, with the worrying news from Tata in Port Talbot. The potential loss of nearly 3,000 jobs is something that resonates personally with me, as the son of a steelworker.

Nick Thomas-Symonds (Image: Supplied) Here's the latest Argus column by Torfaen MP Nick Thomas-Symonds: I HOPE all South Wales Argus readers had a happy and healthy Christmas break, and that you got to spend time with family and friends. At Christmas I always think of those working over the festive holidays, helping run vital services, keeping us all safe, or caring for others. Two days before Christmas I called in to see Eastern Valley Foodbank, to say thank staff and volunteers.

Nick Thomas-Symonds, MP for Torfaen This year’s Autumn Statement was long-awaited, but I doubt it took even five minutes for people to see through it. The Chancellor turned up to talk about growth, but then had to downgrade the growth forecast. He then tried to sell a cut in National Insurance. But people aren’t fooled. They can see that they are worse off under this government, paying more tax.

Nick Thomas-Symonds, MP for Torfaen As the son of a steelworker, promoting British manufacturing has always been important to me, and nowhere more so than in my hometown of Blaenavon. Ahead of Labour Party Conference, I jumped at the chance to visit GOS Engineering in Blaenavon alongside champions of UK manufacturing Make UK. We were joined by Year 11 students from Abersychan School for a tour and a discussion about apprenticeships.
