Selective universities have promised more support for teenagers from care, including lower entry grades, bursaries and priority accommodation. The Russell Group’s 24 members have vowed do more to help care leavers into higher education. They are among the least represented groups at university, with only 14 per cent starting a degree by the age of 19, compared with 47 per cent of their former classmates. Some universities are already helping students who recently left the care system.

Some of its male members are singing mentors, encouraging boys at a nearby school to be more confident and creative.
