Actor, writer, director and producer Nicolas Dozol studied cinema at the Conservatoire Libre du Cinéma Français (CLCF). He has since directed 10 short films, and released his debut feature Last Party (which he also wrote and produced) earlier this year at the Chelsea Film Festival. Victoria Luxford, who interviews him, describes Dozol’s latest creation as a film with “a lot of ambition, turning the high school/teen drama on its head”.

Based on the eponymous novel by Li Xiuwen, Bound in Heaven takes place in Chinese cities of Shanghai, Wuhan and Chongqing. during the early teens of this century. The landscape is unforgivingly urban, with a succession of skyscrapers offering the two leads very little respite. This is a country growing taller and faster than its inhabitants, who often struggle to find a meaning to their increasingly menial and anonymous existence.

It is the early 1990s in Heillange, a small industrial town in Eastern France. The weather is extremely hot and testosterone is brewing inside 14-year-old Anthony (Paul Kircher, of Christophe Honore’s 2022 Winter Boy) and his slightly older cousin. Bored of playing videogames, they rob a canoe and row towards the nude beach on the local lake, where they fail to come across any naked women. No genitalia at sight, or even a little nipple.

Marija erroneously accuses Kristina (Ieva Rupeikaitė) of stealing her trousers, which leads to an awkward exchange. They get over it in order to join a modelling class; it is said to lead to fame.

Rhys (Ayo Tsalithaba) is in an intimate relationship with Ting (Ke Xin Li). Mati (Alex Miron Dauphin) moves in with the couple after their flatmates evict them, following a tragic incident involving a DIY fruit fly trap on “a vegan floor” (a very clunky “woke” joke). The twosome quickly morphs into a love triangle. Our three young, flamboyant, and outrageously Camp protagonists enjoy the perfect multiethnic (Rhys is black, Ting is Asian, and Mati is white) and polyamorous relationship.

Sophie Verbeeck stars as Tez, a contract killer who has been tasked by mafia heavyweight Charles Mahr (Louis-Do de Lencquesaing) to avenge the death of his courier. Mahr has a reason but chooses not to disclose the importance of it to her: he promises the rest of the cash when it is done. Tez is sceptical, but goes along with it, but soon she finds herself fighting for her life. The deeper she investigates the nature of the assignment, the harder it is to pull out of the labyrinth of intrigue.

As a tennis player, Ilie Năstase was formidable, but as a celebrity he proved to be an icon for the little man; a champion of the underdog. Romanian, brash and confident of his good looks, Năstase wandered into the realm with an air that shook up the conservative sport. He was, the documentary points out, a rock star in athletic gear. Năstase – older and more eloquent than he was in his heyday – gives an overview of his life; joined by luminaries of such a calibre as Rafael Nadal.
