Central Iowa robotics team getting ready for world championship

A Central Iowa robotics team is headed to Texas to compete against hundreds of teams from around the world. Atomic Narwhals is made up of 14 seventh through 12th-grade students from multiple metro schools. They've spent dozens of hours building and programming robots since September. All the planning and practicing come down to a two-and-a-half-minute competition. The goal is to drop as many blocks in a bin or hang a block on a bar to score as many points as possible.
One person hurt from West Des Moines apartment fire

A person was hurt after an apartment fire Friday night in West Des Moines. West Des Moines Fire Department crews say they were called to the apartment at 9th Street around 11:20 p.m. Friday. Crews saw smoke from the building and found a person inside the affected unit. That person was taken to the hospital witThe fire didn't affect other units in the building. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Damages are estimated to be $50,000.

Local libraries invite Iowans to 'come in and check (your blood pressure)'

Iowans can now check out blood pressure cuffs from some Central Iowa libraries. It's part of a program called Libraries with Heart, a partnership with the American Heart Association. One of the participating libraries is Urbandale Public Library. Besides books, there are also activities such as pickleball kits and puzzles available for checkout. Four blood pressure monitor kits hit the shelves earlier this year.

Black Cat Ice Cream opens West Des Moines store

Black Cat Ice Cream opened its second location in West Des Moines on 5th Street in Valley Junction this week. The first location is on Cottage Grove Avenue in Des Moines.The biggest difference in this new spot is more space to enjoy the sweet treats. Black Cat is known for its unique ice cream flavors. Owner Alex Carter says there are 300 rotating flavors, and each location showcases 10 daily. Another familiar sight is a wall full of black cat pictures.
