Des Moines is ending its participation in the 30x30 initiative, a program designed to increase female representation in law enforcement, due to a new Iowa law restricting DEI programs. The law, signed by Gov. Kim Reynolds, prohibits government entities and public universities from funding or implementing DEI offices or practices that promote preferential treatment.

It takes effect immediately.

The Legacy Woods Nature Sanctuary project in West Des Moines has secured nearly $2 million in private donations. Recent contributions include $100,000 from Polk County and $250,000 from Hy-Vee. The 28-acre site will feature an arboretum, trails, an orchard, event plaza, and will incorporate the Jordan House Museum and Oak Hill Cemetery. An arboretum planned in West Des Moines is inching closer to its fundraising goals.

Trina Flack, Catch Des Moines' vice president of sales, will be the convention and visitors bureau's next CEO and president. Bureau officials announced that after conducting a nationwide search, they would promote Flack, who has worked at Catch Des Moines for 17 years, according to a news release. Flack replaces Greg Edwards, who announced in March that he would retire from the organization after 25 years as CEO. Edwards will leave Catch Des Moines at the end of July, and Flack's first day is Aug.
