Des Moines announced the recipients of its first-ever small business loan program for local entrepreneurs looking to kickstart or grow their ventures. The city of Des Moines granted $100,000 from its Small Business Impact Loan program in 2025 to six small business owners. The program is part of the city's new small business support center.

Construction could start as soon as the summer for condominiums planned in the Gray's neighborhood on the southern edge of downtown Des Moines. Hubbell Realty Co. is poised to start building 32 condominiums at Gray's Station this summer, the first of at least two phases planned for the project. The development is a response to Hubbell's success with the nearby Edison condo building, which sold out in two years.

A local nonprofit is one step closer to constructing affordable rowhouses on Des Moines' north side. Des Moines City Council members on May 5 unanimously greenlit rezoning properties owned by long-standing nonprofit Urban Dreams to convert a parking lot into row homes in the city's River Bend neighborhood. The six homes would be meant for families and be affordable to residents earning 50% or less of the area median income, or $52,150 for a household of four.

The Creamery, a family-owned ice cream shop, has expanded to three locations in the Des Moines metro area. The newest location opened in the East Village on April 12, replacing The Nosh Café. The Creamery offers a wide variety of ice cream flavors, shakes, malts, slushes, and Dole Whip. Joe and Ashley Fandel took a "leap" when they opened their first ice cream shop, the Creamery, in Polk City.

Des Moines' east side residents are getting a connection to the metro's trail system. City officials are building out a new 1.5-mile trail connection along the south side of Guthrie Avenue on Des Moines' east side that will serve as a "huge, critical" east-west connector for pedestrians and bicyclists over the Union Pacific Railroad tracks, said City Engineer Steve Naber.
