Two-thirds of the world’s surface was scorched by a month or more of record-breaking heat, Guardian analysis of satellite data can reveal. In oceans and on land, from Colombia to China, and from the north to south pole, records for the monthly average temperature were smashed time and time again last year – in some cases, by as much as 5C (9F) hotter than the previous record.

How does the US election work? The US legislature, Congress, has two chambers: the House of Representatives and the Senate. How is the House of Representatives elected and how does it work? The lower chamber, the House of Representatives, has 435 voting seats, each representing a district of roughly similar size. There are elections for each of these seats every two years. But after 14 years of Conservative rule, Keir Starmer’s Labour has been consistently ahead of the Conservatives in the polls since the start of 2022. The Guardian is tracking latest polling averages, sourced from all major British polling companies, until election day.

The current polls suggest that many voters who backed the Conservatives in 2019 will switch to Labour in the next election, leaving seats previously won comfortably by the Tories at risk. Combining constituency results from 2019 with current polls, Guardian analysis can estimate which Conservative seats are the most vulnerable and which household names might lose their seats.
