First published in the February 2009 issue of Street MachineEd Iskenderian leans over his 1924 Model T roadster. Dressed in an Isky Cams work shirt, baseball cap perched squarely on his crew-cut scalp, he squirts fuel into the workings of the ancient carbs. His trademark cigar languishes at a safe distance on a nearby wall. Blink hard and it could, for all the world, be the late 1930s. You can almost smell the hot dog stands where car clubs such as the Bungholers would hang out.

Stretching the tape to a considerable 32ft in length, the Bonneville Boss has a presence few other transporters can rival. And this despite it standing just 5ft 5in to the cab roof. Tipping the scales at 9000lb, the ’Boss took two years to build and was said to be the most expensive truck ever built. Based on a scratch-built chassis, the ’Boss is powered by a scrapyard-sourced 455ci Oldsmobile Toronado motor complete with front-wheel drive.

Robert Williams is a traditional hot rodder to his boot straps, and a man who knows a thing or two about why we do the things we do. He is also one of the greatest American visual artists of the past 50 years. First published in Street Machine's Hot Rod 11 magazine, June 2013The man is unlike any hot rodder you will ever meet, although he probably wouldn’t appreciate the sentiment. Uniquely he has, for the past 50-plus years, immersed himself in two very different worlds.
