Our sport has many fathers. Some burned fast and brightly; many never received the lasting recognition they deserved. Others, like Gene Winfield, had much longer careers and were able to influence and inspire countless car folks over multiple generations. Gene passed away yesterday, aged 97. While his last few years were difficult, Gene remained active and positive, even attending the Grand National Roadster Show only a few weeks ago.

First published in the September 2004 issue of Street MachineFor a car that was just going to be a tidy streeter, Darryl Nielsen’s custom FJ ute has collected a serious haul of trophies in a short time. This year alone the ute has picked up Top Ute at MotorEx, Top 10 at the Brisbane Hot Rod Show, Grand Champion at the Queensland FX-FJ State Titles and a Meguiar’s Showcar Superstars nomination. Despite its showcar credentials, the FJ is a driver too, and fully legal.

The Elite awards at Street Machine Summernats are the pinnacle awards for show car judging at the event. Just making it into the Top 60 is a massive achievement, but making either the Top 10 or Top 20 elite list is something else again. And from amongst this group, only one car is awarded the ultimate accolade of Top Judged. The other big awards that are highly coveted are People’s Choice and the John Taverna Sr Master Craftsman Award.

Australia hasn’t traditionally been great at preserving the history of our go-fast sports, with many famous hot rods, street machines, vans and drag cars being pulled apart for parts or rusting into the ground after their five minutes of fame ends. However, we are slowing seeing a trend to give these old warhorses some more love, with an increasing number of old race cars being brought out of hibernation so new generations can enjoy them, either back on the track or just on display.

First published in the December 2007 issue of Street MachineSeventeen years ago, Alan Fleming rocked the establishment with the Dulux Motorvator, an HG Holden which took the van concept to a new level and pioneered corporate sponsorship in the scene. The loss of his son, Jason, in a motorcycle accident in 1994 knocked Alan for six but he fought back from depression and lent his skills to countless rods, streeters and drag cars.
