    Editor's Log Following my comments about not preserving the great American liner United States in the February edition, I feel that I should make some positive comments about the preservation of well-loved ships in other parts of the world. Luckily, due to various preservation societies often aided by the governments of countries and cities, some great old ships are still preserved.

    I was deeply sorry to hear that the great American liner, the SS United States, is to be sunk as an artificial reef off the coast of Florida. This iconic vessel, built in 1952 was the fastest liner on the North Atlantic route. On her maiden voyage she averaged 35.59 knots eastbound and 34.51 knots westbound and in doing so, won the Blue Riband of the Atlantic. Her speeds have never been beaten by a Trans-Atlantic liner. In the 1950s and 1960s there were some beautiful passenger ships.

    There seems to be growing protests in some ports about the visits of cruise ships and the supposed effect of the cruise ships and tourists have on the local environment. The most publicised recently of such protests, mainly organised by Extinction Rebellion, has been at the locks at Noordersluis and Zeeslius at Ijmuiden preventing ships from going further down the River Ij to the cruise terminal situated in the heart of Amsterdam.
