Staff at an ambulance service lost 25,000 hours in queues outside hospitals waiting to hand patients over last month. Papers being presented at January's meeting of East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) said it was the trust's second-worst month ever for handover delays outside accident and emergency departments. On average, Northamptonshire accounted for the longest of those delays, with ambulances waiting for an average of one hour 25 minutes against a national target of 15 minutes.

The family of a man who died after he repeatedly banged his head against a wall in a mental health suite said there was no "safety net" for people with their son's needs. Declan Morrison, 26, from Cambridge, was autistic, had severe learning disabilities and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. In the hours before his death, he was left naked in a room with CCTV cameras, but his family said the alarm was only raised after he was found unresponsive by staff.

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King's Lynn has taken 11% of its beds out of use saying it does not have enough money to staff them. The hospital had a savings target of £29.5m this financial year (about 9% of its budget), making it the NHS trust with the second highest target in the country, according to the Health Service Journal (HSJ). Closing 60 out of 520 beds was expected to save £5.5m, with money being used to fund care in the community instead.

On Monday Baroness Lampard will open fresh proceedings examining the deaths of inpatients under the care of successive NHS trusts over 23 years. The findings could have implications for mental healthcare nationally.
