    Is this the year of the catcher? It certainly is shaping up that way for Monroe County Region softball teams. Bedford’s Aubrey Hensley and Leila Daniels of Milan will be playing at the Division 1 level when they begin their college careers next year. Both already are three-time All-Region players and each owns more than 100 career RBIs.Hensley set a Region record with 23 home runs as a sophomore and smashed seven more last spring despite playing in only 15 games because of an injury.     Spring sports got geared up in the Monroe County Region last week as schools returned from spring break. Despite some mid-week rain that interrupted the action, there were plenty of outstanding performances. That created a strong cast of candidates for the March 31-April 6 Athlete of the Week Award.     TEMPERANCE – Hannah Williams was a good player for St. Mary Catholic Central’s softball team as a freshman. She is stepping up her game this spring. The Kestrels are off to a 2-0-2 start and Williams has homered in both victories. She got her season started with a home run against Ida on Thursday, then followed that up with a roundtripper Friday in a doubleheader at Bedford. Williams carried a big stick all afternoon Friday, going 6-for-9 with five runs, seven RBI, two doubles and a home run.

    Scoring goals will be difficult against New Boston Huron’s soccer team this spring. The Chiefs only gave up seven all of last season. The main reason for that was Addison Dolencic. She is back for her senior campaign after being named Monroe County Region Girls Soccer Player of the Year a year ago.
