The Merrie Monarch Festival stage at the Edith Kanaka‘ole Multi-Purpose Stadium in Hilo is set, ready for dancers to put forth their best performances in the prestigious hula competition. Thirteen solo dancers will vie for the Miss Aloha Hula title Thursday evening, while 27 different hula groups — 10 kane and 17 wahine — from throughout the state and California will participate in the group kahiko and auana competitions Friday and Saturday, with winners announced late into the night.

The Hawaii Department of Health has approved another cannabis dispensary retail site on Oahu. Noa Botanicals was scheduled to begin sales today at its new retail dispensary at 345 Royal Hawaiian Ave. in Waikiki. Manoa Botanicals LLC, dba Noa Botanicals, was issued a notice to proceed after a final, on-site inspection, health officials said in a news release. The site is Noa Botanicals’ fourth retail location, and Oahu’s 11th retail dispensary.

Queen’s receives $7.5M gift for emergency department

The Queen’s Medical Center announced Friday it received a $7.5 million gift to support the expansion of its emergency department in Honolulu. The donation was made by Candice Uytengsu and is believed to be the largest contribution to The Queen’s Medical Center by one person. In recognition of this contribution, the department will be renamed the Uytengsu Family Emergency Department.
