Thousands of rural households could lose their livelihoods if the Control of Tobacco Products and Electronic Delivery Systems Bill is passed, Agri SA has warned. In its parliamentary submission, Agri SA said the bill, in its current form, neglects to consider the broader implications on agricultural livelihoods. It said tobacco farming remained a vital income source for thousands of rural households, especially in provinces where alternative crops were not economically viable.

Thembisile Hlatshwayo accepted her daughter Sinenhlanhla's posthumous diploma in information and communications technology in applications development at the DUT graduation ceremony. In November Durban University of Technology (DUT) student Sinenhlanhla Hlatshwayo wrote her final examinations, hoping she would cross the graduation stage in May.

I feel heavy today. I just finished writing a story about a brilliant scientist who was meant to receive his PhD today but he was shot and killed in Pietermaritzburg two months ago. Rest in peace Dr Kwanele Mkhize.
