The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) will begin its 50th anniversary celebrations today with a visit to the grave of its founder, Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, at KwaPhindangene Palace in Ulundi, KwaZulu-Natal. More than 30 000 supporters are expected to attend the rally, which will take place at a stadium in Ulundi. The IFP was founded on March 21, 1975, initially as the Inkatha National Cultural Liberation Movement.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) has confirmed its investigation into allegations surrounding KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. Ipid says the probe is in connection with Mkhwanazi’s alleged interference with the arrest of a senior Correctional Services official in Richards Bay in 2023. The Independent Police Investigative Directorate has confirmed that it has requested a sworn statement from Mkhwanazi by March 19.

The provisional liquidation application by the Reserve Bank’s Prudential Authority against the Ithala finance agency is expected to be heard in the Pietermaritzburg High Court today. Earlier this month, the KwaZulu-Natal government requested a R2.4 billion loan from the National Treasury. In a statement, the provincial finance department states that this is to serve as a security guarantee until the entity acquires a banking licence.
