    A man was killed Saturday in a shooting at an apartment complex in Columbia, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department. At about 6 a.m., deputies responded to a call about a shooting in the 1000 block of Southern Drive, the sheriff’s department told The State on Sunday. That’s the Redpoint Columbia apartments, a complex that is marketed for students in the area near the University of South Carolina campus.

    One person was killed Saturday night when an SUV crashed, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol. The single-vehicle collision happened at about 7:30 p.m. in Marion County, said Master Trooper Brandon Bolt. A 2007 Chevrolet SUV was driving north on Progressive Church Road in the Mullins area, according to Bolt. Near the intersection with Front Street the Chevy SUV ran off the right side of Progressive Church Road and crashed into a ditch before flipping over, Bolt said.

    A smoke advisory was issued after a fire started at a landfill in South Carolina Thursday morning, according to Lexington County officials. At about 9:30 a.m., officials reported a fire at the Edmund Landfill. That’s in a rural part of Lexington between Edmund Highway and Fish Hatchery Road. Anyone in the area might have noticed smoke in the sky, officials said in a news release. Officials said the fire was contained at the landfill, adding it was under control and poses no threat to the public.

    Severe weather poses a threat to the Columbia area of South Carolina for the next two days, according to the National Weather Service. Strong to severe storms are expected to begin Thursday afternoon and continue through the night, then another round is forecast to return to the Midlands on Friday, National Weather Service meteorologists said in a morning briefing.

    A 21-year-old South Carolina man was killed over the weekend, according to the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office. Summerville resident Lucas Mortins was the homicide victim, Coroner Darnell Hartwell said in a news release. At about 8 a.m. Sunday, the coroner’s office said it was notified that a victim, later identified as Mortins, had been taken to a Lowcountry hospital and died. Mortins suffered fatal injuries in a stabbing, according to the release.
