The State is a daily morning publication located in Columbia, South Carolina, USA. It is owned by The McClatchy Company and serves readers across the Midlands area, making it the second largest newspaper in South Carolina. The newspaper's reporting team gained recognition as a Pulitzer Prize finalist for their coverage of Hurricane Hugo in 1989. Additionally, its former cartoonist, Robert Ariail, received Pulitzer nominations in both 1995 and 2000. On June 24, 2009, reporter Gina Smith made headlines by breaking the Mark Sanford scandal story after interviewing him at Atlanta's Hartsfield Airport upon his return from Argentina.
