A former search-and-rescue plane for the U.S. Coast Guard will be making its new home away from the sea at Cal Fire’s Air Attack Base in Ramona. The C-130 air tanker is one of seven that will be joining Cal Fire’s fleet of aircraft used to fight fires. These massive planes are faster and can deliver over three times more fire retardant than the two S-2T’s at the Ramona base, said Cal Fire Captain Brent Pascua. “They can fly longer, they don’t need to land and refuel as often,” Pascua said.

The Ramona Community Planning Group agreed March 7 to have its members write letters to the five San Diego County supervisors asking that the tiered winery ordinance update be expedited. Planning group chair Casey Lynch made a motion at the meeting that the group seek the county’s support in including ways for boutique wineries to continue hosting live music as part of the winery update. Nearly 150 people were in attendance at the meeting, which was standing room only before it started.

Ramona artists working in all types of mediums — sculptures, watercolors, acrylics, ceramics, jewelry, fused glass, woodworking and even alcohol ink — will be featured in this year’s Ramona Artist Open Studios Tour. The event, hosted by the Ramona Chamber of Commerce, will take place April 13-14 and will showcase 21 artists at 12 locations around Ramona.

Deborah Trotta, owner of Remedy Ranch, an animal rescue in Ramona, showed up as a guest reader at Mt. Woodson Elementary School for its Reading Across America event on March 4. Like other readers, Trotta was asked to choose her favorite Dr. Seuss book to celebrate his birthday. She chose “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!”“This book to me is good prep for adults to recognize through hills and valleys and ups and downs, just keep going,” she said.

The Ramona form based code — the guideline for building in the community — is being updated to clarify rules and regulations and to make the process easier for business owners. Since its implementation in 2014, the code has only been through one significant update in 2019, said Carol Fowler, chair of the form based code committee that is working on the update. It was meant to be a working document, but got off track during the pandemic and is being brought back up to date, Fowler said.
