Last offseason, the Michigan men’s and women’s basketball teams’ rosters were in a similar state. Whether it was due to a coaching change or a throng of players heading to the transfer portal, both rosters entered this season with just two returning players who averaged at least nine minutes per game during the 2023-24 season. To fill in their rosters, men’s coach Dusty May and women’s coach Kim Barnes Arico took different approaches.

The Wolverines earned a place as a No. 5 seed in the South Region of the NCAA Tournament, set to face No. 12 seed UC San Diego in the first round in Denver. The regular season and Big West tournament champions, the Tritons are a tough draw for Michigan, as they led the country in turnover margin this year.

INDIANAPOLIS — With a minute and a half remaining in the first half on Saturday, Roddy Gayle Jr. witnessed a sight he hadn’t seen in 50 days. He jogged down the left lane in transition, caught a pass at the wing and let a 3-pointer fly. And for the first time in 50 days, the junior guard got to watch it go through the hoop. That triple was Gayle’s first make since he hit one on January 24 at Purdue, and just his second made three in the year 2025.
