    LeCoq offers James Beard Award countdown menuAhead of the James Beard Awards ceremony on Monday, June 16, competition finalist Tara Monsod, executive chef of LeCoq restaurant in La Jolla, is presenting a special countdown menu with a la carte dishes based on the day’s fresh catches and market runs. Monsod will cook and serve from LeCoq’s bar starting at 5 p.m. each Thursday through June 12, and she will curate the bar’s music playlist as well.

    A seventh-grader at San Diego French-American School in La Jolla took it on himself to create a more eco-friendly sunscreen, and his work already has garnered attention from the California Senate. Now he’s eyeing improvements to the ingredients. Martin Valkanov’s sunscreen ditches chemicals such as zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, oxybenzone and octinoxate, which he views as disruptive or harmful to coral reefs, fish and other aquatic organisms.

    Not every UC San Diego student can find community in a fraternity or an academic group like a math club. With one of the university’s newest clubs, third-year public health major Olivia Angulo hopes to give students another option — one they can take into their dorm rooms. At the beginning of UCSD’s spring quarter this year, Angulo launched Rooted @ UCSD to encourage her peers to embrace nature and find solace in tending to house plants.
