San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria wants to close all 37 city library branches every Sunday and Monday, cut recreation center hours by more than 30% and eliminate all of the city’s 184 beach and bay fire rings. The mayor also is proposing a 10% cut to arts funding, among other measures. Gloria announced the proposed cuts April 15 to help close a projected $258 million deficit in the city’s general fund budget for the new fiscal year that begins July 1.

As UC San Diego’s mock trial team recently accomplished a feat it hadn’t reached since 2019 — traveling beyond the West Coast for a national tournament — one of its members went even further. Santiago Larson, a fourth-year political science major, finished as the highest-ranked witness in the American Mock Trial Association’s National Championship Tournament April 4-6 in Cleveland.

Jeff Luna told the La Jolla Light in 2020 that he aimed to make Muirlands Middle School a “relevant” and “viable” option for education. In his final days as principal there, he believes he has fulfilled that goal. Luna is preparing for his impending retirement after 35 years in education — the past five leading Muirlands. His official final day is Monday, June 30. “This community … has a lot of options for our families, with private schools abundant in our area,” Luna told the Light this week.

Nearly a decade ago, UC San Diego professor Victoria Ojeda saw a need for people hoping to reintegrate into society after troubles with the law — laser tattoo removal services. With treatments being costly and requiring local clients to drive as far as Los Angeles, Ojeda sought to bring free services to San Diego. Her efforts became the UC San Diego Clean Slate Free Tattoo Removal Program. The program, offered one Saturday each month, recently has seen monthly requests spike from 10 to 20-25.
