    NL Health Services has been chosen by the Mental Health Commission of Canada as a demonstration site for a project designed to enhance mental health care across the country. Dr. Timothy Hierlihy, the physician lead for the project at NL Health Services, says they were one of four successful applicants—the others being in Ontario, Manitoba and British Columbia.

    An alternative arts organization is hitting the west coast once again. Lawnya Vawnya are bringing back their Get Out of Town Concert Series to Corner Brook, which sees music acts and artists typically programmed in their spring festival travel to areas outside of St. John’s.

    The Home Again Furniture Bank has officially launched its annual Heads Without Beds community fundraiser. The furniture bank helps provide and deliver furniture, such as beds, to those in need. The annual event, which is taking place on March 22, will see people voluntarily give up their beds for a night to raise awareness of the issue, and raise funds for the organization. The goal, this year is $50,000.

    Memorial University has partnered with the Association for New Canadians to allow members of the Newcomer Entrepreneurship Training Program to attend professional development courses at the Gardiner Centre. The partnership allows participants to attend free of charge. According to MUN, 16 people from Ukraine, Mexico, Iran and Afghanistan have earned 32 certificates through the program so far. Lesya Danchyshyn, a Psychologist in her native Ukraine, has participated in the program.

    The federal government is providing $1.5 million to establish seven climate comfort centres on the southwest coast. According to the federal government, the centres are places where people can find shelter, internet access, and check on family during extreme weather events. The southwest coast knows all to well the devastating impacts os such storms. The region was hit by the catastrophic Hurricane Fiona in 2022.
