LendingClub asked 3,252 U.S. consumers if they needed their next paycheck to cover their monthly spending; 62% answered yes. In contrast, the Federal Reserve found that 54% of Americans have emergency savings to cover three months of expenses.

Economic conditions in the 1970s were significantly worse than today’s. Stagflation is persistent high inflation combined with low growth in national income and high unemployment. This situation characterized the U.S. and other industrial countries for much of the 1970s. Averages for these markers from 1974 to 1975 as compared to those in 2023 through the first quarter of 2024 were:Inflation: 10.1% versus 4.0%. Unemployment: 7.1% versus 3.7%. Real GDP growth: -0.4% versus 2.6%.

Gas costs in April 2024 were about the same as those in April 2023. The U.S. Energy Information Administration records weekly, monthly, and yearly averages of all formulations of regular retail gasoline prices. In April 2023, the recorded price was $3.60. In April 2024, it was $3.61 — a difference of about one penny. Gas prices in the first four months of 2024 ($3.33) averaged about 11 cents lower than in the first four months of 2023 ($3.44). Gas prices rose 17% between January and April 2024.
