Firefighters at the scene of a car fire on the Bay Bridge that closed all eastbound lanes. California Highway PatrolA vehicle towing a small motor home caught fire on the Bay Bridge Tuesday afternoon, blocking several lanes of traffic, officials said. The flames were seen coming from the motor home that was halted in the bridge’s middle lane near the Interstate 80 East Treasure Island off ramp at 1:43 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

A 5.2 magnitude earthquake struck the greater San Diego area Monday morning, according to data from the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake shook the area beginning at 10:13 a.m., the USGS reported, with an epicenter close to the Santa Ysabel Reservation, home to the Santa Ysabel Band of Diegueño Mission Indians, about 55 miles west of downtown San Diego.

For eight hours on Saturday, dozens of volunteers cleared mountains of trash dumped on East 12th Street in Oakland, filling, by day’s end, two dump trailers with discarded refrigerators, mattresses, couches and even a dead chicken in a cage. The volunteers, organized by the Urban Compassion Project, were expecting the assistance of Oakland Public Works, which had committed in an email to sending a garbage truck to transport the trash to the city dump.

For decades, developers have been eyeing a vacant 86-acre former quarry in Pacifica wedged between the Pacific Ocean and Highway 1. The site, known as the Rockaway Quarry, operated as an industrial quarry until 1987. Since then, it has sat empty, in need of what Pacifica officials say is an extensive reclamation process requiring nearly a million cubic yards of soil to restore the excavated quarry face to its pre-mining condition before development can begin.
