Parliament on Friday passed the Financial Crimes Bill (Amendment) which aims to align the country’s laws with the Financial Action Task Force (Fatf)’s 40 recommendations to strengthen systems for detecting and halting financial crimes. The High Court of Malawi has temporarily halted the extradition of Prophet Shepherd Bushiri and his wife Mary to South Africa to answer charges by allowing the couple to remain on bail until August 5 2025. Presiding Judge Mzonde Mvula has since scheduled June 12, 2025 for oral arguments from both defence and prosecution teams on the applications filed by the defence against the judgement of the Lilongwe Chief Resident Magistrate’s Court for the couple to be extradited.

The High Court of Malawi will today convene in Lilongwe to start hearing applications filed by the defence in an extradition case of Prophet Shepherd Bushiri and his wife Mary. The application follows the ruling last month by High Court Judge Madalitso Chimwaza, sitting as chief resident magistrate, approving the couple’s extradition to South Africa where they are accused of several offences.

To solve fuel transportation woes, the National Oil Company of Malawi (Nocma) says it has identified Tanzania’s Tanga Port as a viable alternative to the ports of Dar es Salaam and Beira for fuel imports. Nocma spokesperson Raymond Likambale said that while Tanga Port is 1 600 kilometres from Lilongwe—about 60 km longer than Dar es Salaam—the latter and Beira in Mozambique remain congested until mid this year.
