Findings of a new study on laws governing campaign financing in the country have shown gaps that allow public funds to be secretly channelled to political parties. In the report on the ‘Assessment of compliance gaps in political party and campaign financing under the existing Malawi legal framework’, the researchers, among others, noted that the current ban on donations from State-owned corporations to political parties, especially the one in power, was too narrow.

The African Union (AU) has challenged leaders of political parties in Malawi to prioritise prevention of violence against women and girls ahead of the September 16 General Election. AU special envoy on women, peace and security Ndeye Benita Diop Diop, who is leading an 11-member AU Political Affairs, Peace and Security Department delegation, also urged parties to include more women in leadership roles rather than limiting them to being voters.
