It has been 12 months since the Voice Referendum was defeated and you have to wonder what has happened since. The former Yes Campaigners appear to be either curled up into a foetal position or caught up in a continuing whinge or both.

Don’t believe them if they try to justify this by saying Aboriginal people supported the Voice. The available data in remote majority Aboriginal communities, including Fitzroy Crossing, Halls Creek, Palm Island, Yarrabah and the remote top end of the Northern Territory, shows overwhelming lack of interest in the Voice, with average voter turnout well under 40 per cent.

So, the prime minister should assemble all premiers and chief ministers and relevant federal, state and territory ministers at national cabinet to endorse and fully support this review. The plan must be centred on education and economic participation. These solutions are simple and proven. In fact, they are the only solutions.

I am Australian. I’m also a member of the Bundjalung, Gumbaynggirr and Yuin first nations of Australia. I opposed the Voice and am urging all Australians to vote No in the Referendum. Nearly a decade ago I gave a speech about reconciliation. Its theme came from my Catholic faith. For Catholics, “reconciliation” has two parts—sorry and forgiveness. I said that in this country we talk a lot about the sorry part, but we never talk about the forgiveness part.

Leafing through the official Yes pamphlet for the referendum is like reading a fantasy novel about a magical wand called the Voice that will solve all problems facing Aboriginal people if only we just let it. It promises the Voice will “ensure people have a better life”. It goes on: “For a long time, governments with good intentions have spent billions trying to deal with these issues. But they haven’t achieved lasting improvement because they haven’t listened to people on the ground.

A few weeks ago the Snopes website “fact checked” a social media claim that a photo of a woman and child sitting next to a black woman crouched on the floor was of a young Elon Musk and his mother in South Africa with their black maid who wasn’t allowed to sit on the furniture. It wasn’t a photo of the Musk household and Snopes proved the claim was demonstrably false. So, what was the Snopes verdict for this false claim? “Miscaptioned”.
