Glasgow (Image: Newsquest) The greater Glasgow region needs a directly-elected mayor and a devolution deal to avoid falling behind other large UK cities, a think tank has recommended. The Centre for Cities said Glasgow could be missing out on billions in funding without the changes. A report, The Missing Piece In The Big Cities’ Jigsaw, claimed Scotland’s GDP would be 4.6% larger than it is now if Glasgow’s economy performed in line with the average for cities of its size.

ScotRail (Image: Newsquest) More than 17,000 ScotRail trains were cancelled in the last year, a freedom of information request has found. The data, released after a request by the Scottish Liberal Democrats, found 17,491 services were cancelled in 2024/25. Some 306,120 trains did not arrive within a minute of their scheduled arrival time, which the party said accounted for 45% of all trains. Another 71,691 were late by five or more minutes – around 10% of all trains.

On Wednesday, June 11, police allegedly uncovered a firearm in the Roseburn Path area of Edinburgh. Officers have now confirmed a 25-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection. He was expected to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Friday, June 13. Cops also executed search warrants at addresses in South Queensferry and Edinburgh on Friday morning.
