Dihydrohydroxystreptose (3-C-(hydroxymethyl)lyxose) and virenose (6-deoxy-3-C-methyl-gulcose) are unique monosaccharide units isolated from outer membrane cell envelope lipopolysaccharide I (LPS I) of bacterium Coxiella burnetii [1]. Being the terminal sugar units in the LPS I, these sugar units play crucial role in pathogenicity, immunogenicity and the host-microbe interactions [2]. Both sugars feature a carbon-branch at the C-3 position.
