Painter Kelcey Loomer used to have a studio on the second floor of Riverview Station in the River Arts District. During Tropical Storm Helene, the 700-square-foot space filled with 18 inches of water, and she lost about half of her paintings. Loomer was still scrubbing mud off things when she was contacted by Bernadette Bender, co-owner of Bender Gallery downtown, with the idea of a group benefit show.

Rare Bird Farm will host a theater performance, the capstone to the inaugural Rare Bird Farm Inclusive Theatre Camp, at Aldridge Hall in the Christmount Christian Assembly in Black Mountain on Sunday, Sept. 29, 2 p.m. Campers with intellectual and developmental disabilities will come together with volunteer artists and professional teaching artists to create an original musical in just two days.

On the Wing Gallery is hosting a reception for its new exhibition, Union, on Friday, Aug. 16, 5-8 p.m.On the Wing, located in in the River Arts District, is known for artfully arranging farm-raised butterflies and preserving them in pilot cases. Union represents a collaboration between On the Wing’s entomological artists, David Trophia, Sam Trophia and Shane Hall, and jeweler Deb Karash, who layers color onto copper pieces using colored pencils.

Local theater company Venture Shakespeare will present Hamlet: A Play in 100 Minutes on the lawn at Kenilworth Presbyterian Church on Friday, Aug. 9, and Saturday, Aug. 10, at 7 p.m.The ensemble production will remain faithful to Shakespeare’s text, though it has been abbreviated by Kirstin Daniel, Venture’s creative director, to fit into 90 minutes. “I think it’s interesting that we ended up choosing Hamlet,” Daniel says. “It’s important, you know, uncovering what the play is for us at this moment.
