At the end of a long day at work, I found out on social media that the husband of a dear friend had died after a sudden stroke. Still in disbelief and struggling to convey my sympathy in a concise Facebook comment, I happened to put on Cameron Knowler’s CRK. There was something deeply comforting about the gentle acoustic bubbling underneath the opening monologue, but the words seemed to be a scattered collage, randomly reassembled.

At first glance, Grisha Goryachev seems an unlikely torch bearer for flamenco guitar. He was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1977, descended from ancestors with Russian and Ukrainian lines. His forebears lived far from Andalusia, where flamenco music developed among the Romani people who migrated from India to settle in southern Spain in the ninth century.

When Tropical Storm Helene swept through Western North Carolina in late September, the region’s already critical affordable housing situation immediately worsened. An Oct. 23 preliminary assessment by the N.C. Office of State Budget and Management estimates that about 126,000 homes were destroyed or damaged by the storm and that some 220,000 households will apply for assistance.
