INTRODUCTION Marine phytoplankton contribute to roughly 50% of global primary production and contribute significantly to global carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) cycling (Armbrust, 2009; Nelson et al., 1995). Many classes of phytoplankton are known to form resting stages which sink to the underlying sediment during temporarily adverse growth conditions in the euphotic zone (Ellegaard & Ribeiro, 2018; Rynearson et al., 2013).

1 INTRODUCTION All organisms require trace amounts of metals to function and produce new biomass. However, elevated metal concentrations quickly become toxic (Lemire et al., 2013; Waldron & Robinson, 2009), with structural effects on polluted ecosystems (Blanck, 2002; Blanck & Dahl, 1996; Pesce et al., 2010; Schmitt et al., 2005).
