The Phu Quoc Municipal People’s Committee announced the plans following a field survey of the site on 2 November. The hospital is part of a plan to develop the island – Vietnam’s largest, located west of the mainland near the Cambodian coast – into a major destination for both domestic and international tourists. The facility, to be called the An Thoi International Hospital, is intended to support the expected increase in tourist numbers to the island following the redevelopment.

The work is being funded through a donation of A$15 million from the Australian federal government, as well as a further A$6 million from the Tasmanian government. The base, due to open in 2027, is intended to boost RFDS’s capacity for both rotary- and fixed-wing aircraft in the region, as well as expand its capacity to deliver ground vehicle transfers.

IATA reported that total demand for air travel in September 2024 was up 7.1% year on year in terms of revenue passenger kilometres (RPK), while total capacity – measured in available seat kilometres (ASK) – was up 5.8%. The load factor for the month was 83.6%. The rise was driven by a surge in international travel, with demand for that sector growing by 9.2% in September 2024 compared with the same month in 2023. Much of this reflected a 9.1% year-on-year increase in capacity.

Ornge, an air medical service operated by the Canadian province of Ontario, traces its roots back to 1977, when its forebear the Ontario Air Ambulance Service was established. Initially flying a single helicopter named ‘Bandage One’, the service, based out of Toronto’s Buttonville Airport and operated by the province’s Ministry of Health, expanded substantially over the next few years.

The deal includes the provision of 35 aircraft to the Hellenic Army, alongside personnel training, all training equipment, and an initial provisioning package. The contract follows the ratification of the government-to-government deal by the Greek government and its US counterparts in April. The multi-role helicopters will be used by the Greek military to support missions in the fields of national security and humanitarian response.
