Sr. Angelina Julom joined the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth as an aspirant in 1985, visiting informal settlers and providing spiritual needs, like sacraments and Bible studies. She also taught nursery students during her earlier years as a nun, making her final profession of vows in 1996. During high school, she noticed that relatives and friends would approach her and confide about things that troubled them.

For more than 10 years, the Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception of the Holy Mother of God have been supporting the education of children. They have also been helping economically challenged parents earn more and sustain the needs of their children in education. Currently, the sisters take care of two "adopted" communities in the Philippines' central Visayas region, said Sr. Girlie Lopez, formation program coordinator of her congregation.

On May 23, 2017, what would be known as the Siege of Marawi erupted between the Philippine government forces, and the Maute and Abu Sayyaf groups affiliated with the Islamic State group. Br. Christopher Villanueva, a Franciscan friar, joined other volunteers in a relief mission trip to Lanao del Norte, where evacuees sought refuge. Marawi is a Islamic city in Lanao del Sur more than 1,200 kilometers southeast of Manila. Lanao del Norte is a neighboring province.

The Philippines is the only state outside the Vatican prohibiting divorce — for now, as a new House bill is currently in the works to legalize it. The proposed Absolute Divorce Act (House Bill No. 9349) passed the third and final reading in May this year and is still awaiting Senate approval before the president signs it into law.

The Sisters of the Divine Savior in the Philippines are unanimously opposed to a proposed constitutional change on economic provisions, said Sr. Adeline Abamo, the congregation's outgoing regional superior. On March 6, the House of Representatives adopted a resolution calling for a convention to amend the constitution; the delegates to vote on the resolution will be elected in October, though the constitutional convention still has no date.
