I am particularly intrigued by Mama’s description of Nigeria’s totalitarian military and authoritarian democratic structures as populist. Perhaps the most recent example of populist governance was President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, which clearly demonstrates how femocracy maps onto the rhetoric of populist governance.

What books or kinds of books did you read growing up? My mom was intentional about raising a child who reads. I was, I think, seven when I got this little book filled with short English stories. She also got me the classical Nigerian texts—The Bottled Leopard, Things Fall Apart, etc. By the time I was ten, I got Richard Wright’s Black Boy as a birthday present, and it rocked my world.
