Kate O’Connor reinforced her reputation as a performer for the big occasion when she won a silver medal in the pentathlon at the World Indoor Championships at Nanjing in China on Friday. It was a first podium finish for an Irish athlete at the championships since Derval O’Rourke’s 60m hurdles triumph in 2006.

What a glorious 19 hours it was. From the FAI press release that dropped in shortly after 5pm on Wednesday announcing Carla Ward’s appointment until midday on Thursday, we were reconsidering some of our previous opinions on the FAI . Not all of them mind; one swallow doesn’t make a summer and all that. But the Ward news was a pleasant surprise – the women’s national team were getting a highly rated coach who boasts an impressive CV.

When are the IRFU going to start looking at women's rugby players as, well, players? They're not 'just the girls'. They're not your daughters. They're not an afterthought. They're not a team that no one gives a f*** about. They're rugby players. That's all they want to be, and if those tasked with running rugby in this country simply looked at them as such, then rugby might be in a better place. But women's rugby is constantly an afterthought here.
