AUSTIN, Texas – For the first time in 22 years, UTA volleyball made an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. However, the Mavericks’ historic season came to an end in a defeat against No. 6 seed University of Southern California, 3-0. Despite being in unfamiliar territory, the team soaked in the moment, dancing and singing to the court as the DJ spun house records with fans bopping to well-known tunes.

Western Athletic Conference champions, family, friends and UTA staff members packed a suite at College Park Center to learn who the volleyball team (29-2, 16-0) would face in its first NCAA tournament appearance in over 20 years. With their full attention on the TV, the NCAA announced the matchup: UTA vs University of Southern California, No. 6 in the Penn State quarter of the bracket. When UTA popped up on the screen, the room erupted with cheers, claps and excitement.

Head volleyball coach J.T. Wenger became increasingly animated on the courtside. Wenger had been quiet all season, even when his team was down. But this was UTA’s final point in the Western Athletic Conference Volleyball Tournament championship. So, Wenger yelled his strategy aloud, hoping his players could hear. Then, he hopped in excitement as graduate outside hitter Brianna Ford hit a kill to secure the title, locking in an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2002.

The crowd rallied behind each point, cheered on every dig and sang in unison to Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline,” just as the Mavericks completed a sweep on their home court. For the first time since 2021, the Mavericks advanced to the Western Athletic Conference Volleyball Tournament semifinals. The No. 1 team (27-2, 16-0) defeated No. 8 Abilene Christian University (10-18, 5-11) 3-0 Thursday at College Park Center.
