    The youth correctional facility lies in the green outskirts of a town on the Delaware river, where the state line between Pennsylvania and New Jersey reaches its westernmost extent. To get there, you drive up a tree-lined avenue with fields on both sides. In winter, the slanted sun makes the frost glow and sometimes a pheasant runs beside the car. Underneath the trees’ dark canopy, a building appears ahead.

    “In the dark times / Will there also be singing?” asked Bertolt Brecht in 1939. The answer, of course, is yes: “There will also be singing / Of the dark times.” Why has poetry been so important in periods of political defeat? This is a question I thought about often during Donald Trump’s first presidency, and which comes up again now. It was common then for people to say we were living in dark times, as it no doubt will be in the months and years to come.

    While Shakespeare seems to maintain the status of perennial contemporary, Milton does not enjoy quite the same standing. The knotty theological wrangling and offensively strict gender hierarchies of Paradise Lost, not to mention the obtrusive and rebarbative personality of its author, make it an ever-harder sell. Is Milton’s 10,565-line poem in blank verse about the fall of Adam and Eve anything more than, as one 20th-century critic memorably put it, ‘a monument to dead ideas’?

    RN There seems to be a strong link in your life between art and spirituality. Going back a bit to primary school you had a subject that you used to enjoy, where you were told Bible stories and then had to come up with a picture or a drawing about that story. Was this your first experience of this connection of art and religion or spirituality? PZ I’m not sure about that because then in primary school I was just a young child in class doing what she likes doing.
