Born on January 30, 1935, in Johannesburg to Solomon Sachs and Rachel Ginsberg, Albert “Albie” Sachs turned 90 in January. Albie moved to Cape Town with his mother and his younger brother when he was three years old. Advanced for his age at school, he skipped two grades and as a result enrolled for his first year of university when he was only 15.

In 1991, acclaimed South African artist Helen Sebidi’s artworks were presumed stolen in Sweden. Three decades later, a caretaker at the residential college where they disappeared found them in a ceiling cupboard, still in their original packaging. While her mother earned a living as a domestic worker in Johannesburg, Mmakgabo Helen Sebidi was raised in the countryside by her grandmother, from whom she learned the traditional crafts of mural painting and pyro engraving of calabashes.

RN There seems to be a strong link in your life between art and spirituality. Going back a bit to primary school you had a subject that you used to enjoy, where you were told Bible stories and then had to come up with a picture or a drawing about that story. Was this your first experience of this connection of art and religion or spirituality? PZ I’m not sure about that because then in primary school I was just a young child in class doing what she likes doing.
