1. IntroductionHemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) belongs to the group of thrombotic microangiopathies (TMAs). It is defined by hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia and kidney failure. The typical diarrhea-associated form of HUS is caused by the exotoxins of certain bacteria, most frequently enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli. By contrast, the atypical form of HUS (aHUS) is a consequence of deficiency in the regulatory proteins of the alternative complement pathway [1,2].
